Who it suits
Almost everyone. Layered short cuts solve more problems than any other category — flat hair gets lift, thick hair gets weight removed, fine hair gets the illusion of density, and any face shape can be flattered by adjusting where the layers fall. It is the safest first short cut for women who haven't gone short before.
How to ask for it
Specify the length of the longest piece (chin, jaw, or shoulder) and the placement of the shortest layer (crown, eye level, or chin level). The combination tells the stylist whether you want a soft pixie-shag hybrid (short layers at the crown, longer layers framing the face) or a textured bob (more uniform layering through the back, longer face-frame in the front).
What to expect at the salon
45 to 60 minutes. Layered cuts forgive imprecision in a way blunt cuts do not, so the chair time is shorter and the price is usually slightly lower. $65 to $140 in most US markets.
Maintenance and the grow-out
Trims every 6 to 8 weeks. The layered cut grows out beautifully — within ten weeks it has transitioned into a longer layered cut, and within four months into shoulder length. No awkward stage.
Styling at home
A volume mousse at the roots, a round-brush dry through the top layers, and a curl cream worked through the ends. Tip the head upside down for the last 30 seconds of drying — the lift at the crown is what makes layered short cuts feel modern instead of dated.
Celebrity inspiration
Kris Jenner, Diane Keaton, and Sharon Osbourne all wear short layered cuts as part of their signature looks.
